Planting

Join us for Planting – a Celebration of Caring for Country

On September 7th, during Porneet season, something special is happening along the creeks and rivers of Naarm and at Fed Square – it’s Planting, a joyful day of community, connection, and caring for Country.

Planting is more than putting seedlings in the ground. It’s a shared celebration, a ceremony, and a hands-on way for people of all ages to connect with nature, culture, and each other. It’s a chance to get your hands dirty while learning from Wurundjeri Elders and local experts who guide us with deep knowledge and care for Country.

In partnership with community groups working on habitat regeneration, Planting invites locals and visitors alike to take part in meaningful, on-the-ground planting activities along Naarm’s creeks and waterways. If you can’t make the planting activity in the morning come to Fed Sq for the afternoon celebrations.  Starting with a Wurrundjeri smoking ceremony and continuing with music from the Orb Weavers and others, there’ll also be participative activities like collecting  and propagating seeds, learning to weave, or joining a gardening or printing workshop.

Why plant? Because it’s good for you and the planet. Planting native trees, grasses, and food gardens supports local ecosystems and boosts our own wellbeing. And when we do it together, we create a living network – like a mycelium – connecting communities, places, and stories across the city.

All across Australia, volunteers are already out there, caring for Country in everyday ways – picking up litter, weeding, planting, protecting wildlife, and keeping an eye on local biodiversity. Planting brings all that quiet work into the spotlight and invites everyone to join in, no matter your age or experience.

It’s also a great way to introduce kids, families, and newcomers to the joy of volunteering and to build new habits that help our communities thrive. By starting at the grassroots – quite literally – we grow a culture of care and responsibility for the land and waterways that sustain us.

So come along, roll up your sleeves, and be part of this growing movement. Planting is about connection, culture, and climate action – and we’d love for you to be a part of it.
