Planting

Planting

Join us on Sunday September 7 during Porneet season for Planting a day of community, connection, and caring for Country, taking place along Naarm’s creeks and rivers and at Fed Square.

Planting is more than putting seedlings in the ground. It’s a shared celebration and ceremony with Wurundjeri Elders, offering hands-on opportunities to connect with nature, culture, and each other.

Guided by local experts, participants will learn about caring for Country and take part in meaningful planting activities that support local ecosystems. In partnership with community groups focused on habitat regeneration, the event invites everyone—locals and visitors alike—to contribute to planting native trees and grasses.

Can't join the morning planting? Head to Fed Square in the afternoon for a Wurundjeri smoking ceremony, live music from the Orb Weavers, music for plants by DJ Yuqi from Earworthy, sound and art installations from Lichen Kelp, poster by Zena Cumpston, and a host of interactive workshops including seed propagation led by Bili Nursery and gardening talks from Russell Larke - Head Gardener at MAP Co.

Planting together boosts wellbeing and fosters a living network of communities and stories along the creeks and rivers of Naarm. Across Australia, volunteers are caring for Country—through weeding, planting, protecting wildlife, and more. Planting shines a light on these everyday acts and encourages everyone to take part, regardless of age or experience. By starting at the grassroots—literally—we nurture a culture of responsibility for the land and waterways that sustain us along the creeks and rivers of Naarm and at Fed Square.

So roll up your sleeves and join the movement, Planting is about connection, culture, and climate action—and we’d love for you to be part of it.
